Chengdu does not hurry, and after this day you will understand why. Morning at the Panda Base while the bears are awake and eating (they sleep by 11 — so do we time it right), with a buddy who explains the breeding programme, the bamboo economics and the personalities of the famous residents.
Then the flip side: People's Park teahouse culture — bamboo chairs, endless refills, ear-cleaning masters (optional, unforgettable), and mahjong at maximum volume. Lunch is a proper Sichuan set: mapo tofu with the real numbing pepper, sweet-water noodles, tea-smoked duck.
Options for the afternoon: Wenshu Monastery incense courts, Jinli ancient street, or a hotpot masterclass where you control the chili. The day ends when Chengdu says it ends.

Panda Base at Opening
Early pickup (pandas eat breakfast at 8-ish and nap by 11). We route to the outdoor enclosures first: adults munching, cubs tumbling. Your buddy covers the breeding science and introduces the celebrity bears by name.

Red Pandas & Bamboo Grove
The underrated stars: red pandas cross the boardwalk overhead in the grove section. Then a quiet walk through the base's bamboo park to the museum for the conservation story.

Sichuan Lunch
A family restaurant near Wenshu: mapo tofu, sweet-water noodles, tea-smoked duck and steamed vegetables. Your buddy explains the two-channel Sichuan pepper experience (málà) — and calibrates the chili to your table.

People's Park Teahouse
Bamboo chairs, $1 tea with unlimited hot-water refills, ear-cleaning masters with tuning forks (optional), and mahjong thunder in the background. This is the Chengdu you came for. Your buddy teaches mahjong basics if the table is curious.

Wenshu Monastery & Jinli Options
Incense courtyards and the monastery tea house, or Jinli ancient street for souvenirs and shadow-puppet shows. End with an optional hotpot dinner booking (your buddy negotiates the broth split) — or drop-off at your hotel.

Frequently asked questions
Can we hold a panda?
The holding programme ended years ago — good for the pandas. What we offer instead is the best viewing hours and the full conservation story, which is genuinely moving.
Is the spicy food avoidable?
Yes — we order to your table's tolerance, and several signature dishes are mild. The teahouse snacks are entirely spice-free.
What about the Leshan Giant Buddha?
It needs a full separate day. We can arrange it as a custom add-on — message us.
