Tour overview

This is the Great Wall you saw in your imagination: watchtowers marching across pine-covered ridges, cable cars gliding up, and enough quiet to hear the wind. Mutianyu is greener, quieter and better preserved than Badaling — and our early start means you walk the wall before the day-trippers arrive.

Your buddy handles everything: door-to-door private car, entrance tickets booked in advance, cable car both ways (or the toboggan down, if you dare), and a farm-to-table lunch in a village restaurant at the foot of the wall. Along the way, learn how the wall was actually built, defended and — more than once — abandoned.

Flexible by design: add a morning tea ceremony, a cloisonné workshop stop, or return early for an afternoon in the hutongs. Your day, your pace.

Why you'll love it

  • Walk the wall at golden hour before the crowds arrive
  • Cable car up + optional toboggan down (yes, it is as fun as it sounds)
  • All-inclusive: tickets, private car, farm lunch and hotel pickup
  • Learn the real history — watchtower signalling, garrison life and Ming logistics
  • Photo spots your buddy actually knows, not the ones on the coach tours

Your itinerary

07:30

Hotel Pickup & Scenic Drive

Your buddy meets you in the hotel lobby with a private car. Watch Beijing wake up as we head northeast into the mountains — about 90 minutes with a coffee stop if you need one.

Cable Car to Tower 14

We take the cable car straight to the high section, skipping the 4,000+ steps. From Tower 14 to Tower 20 you get the classic Mutianyu panorama — and in 20 minutes of walking you understand why they call it "the long wall of ten thousand li".

10:00

Walk the Ridge at Your Pace

Two to three hours on the wall with your buddy explaining signalling systems, garrison life and why some sections are steep as ladders. Go as far as your legs agree to — this is a private tour, the schedule bends to you.

12:30

Toboggan or Cable Car Down

Race down the mountain on the wheeled toboggan run, or glide down by cable car if you prefer your thrills scenic. Either way, lunch has been earned.

Farm Lunch at the Foot of the Wall

A family-run restaurant in Mutianyu village: mountain mushrooms, hand-pulled noodles, roasted aubergine and the local apricot drink. Vegetarian and gluten-free options available — tell us in advance.

Return to Beijing

Sleep, scroll your photos, or chat with your buddy about anything China-related — most guests say the ride home is where the best conversations happen. Hotel drop-off by 16:00-16:30.

Frequently asked questions

How strenuous is the walking?
With the cable car, expect 2–3 hours of gentle-to-moderate walking with steps. You choose how far to go — your buddy adapts the route to your fitness level.
What about bad weather?
Rain or snow makes the wall dramatic, not dangerous — we run in all weather. If the cable car closes for safety, we refund the difference or reschedule, your choice.
Can we visit a less touristy section instead?
Yes. We also run Jiankou and Huanghuacheng for keen hikers. Message us and we will tailor the day.
Is lunch suitable for vegetarians?
Absolutely. The farm restaurant cooks several vegetarian dishes; tell us your dietary needs at booking and we arrange in advance.

Went with my brother, both of us over 60, worried about the walking. Buddy took us on the gentler eastern stretch and we never felt like we were holding anyone up. Book with confidence, older travellers.

Very well organized. I walk slowly and the buddy never rushed me once — we took the cable car both ways and still had two hours on the wall. Only wish the drive back had less traffic, but that is Beijing.

Booked this for our honeymoon and they arranged a small surprise at lunch (champagne-ish sparkling juice and a banner). The toboggan down had us laughing like kids. Private car was spotless, buddy's English flawless.
Travel Buddy teamCongratulations again! The toboggan reports you both screamed. — TB

The early start felt brutal at 6:30 but standing on the wall with maybe ten other people, hearing nothing but wind — worth every yawn. Our buddy Wang knew which towers had the best light and took photos like a pro. Lunch in the village was the best meal of our whole China trip.
Travel Buddy teamSo glad you made it up before the crowds, Sarah! Wang says the morning light on Tower 16 was made for you. — Travel Buddy team
