Tour overview

Marco Polo called Hangzhou "the most splendid city in the world", and Chinese travellers have agreed for a thousand years with the saying: above is heaven, below are Suzhou and Hangzhou. This day shows you why, at a pace the city itself would approve of.

Morning boat on West Lake as the mist lifts, with the pagoda silhouettes and the Broken Bridge legends. Then into the Meijiawu tea terraces to walk among the bushes, meet a tea-farming family, and taste this spring's first-pick Longjing — pan-fired by hand in a wok you can touch.

Lunch is the lake on a plate: West Lake vinegar fish, Dongpo pork, dragon-well shrimp. Afternoon options: Lingyin Temple's rock-carved Buddhas, the Longjing tea museum, or a bicycle loop of the lake causeways. Shanghai day-trip friendly — 45 minutes by fast rail.

Why you'll love it

  • Private boat on West Lake at the misty hour
  • Longjing tea village walk with a tea-farming family visit
  • Hand-fired wok tasting: this season's first-pick Longjing
  • Lakeside lunch: West Lake vinegar fish & Dongpo pork
  • Lingyin Temple's 1,000-year rock carvings option

Your itinerary

08:30

Meet & Lake Boat

Meet your buddy at the lake (or Hangzhou East station if arriving from Shanghai). Private wooden boat for the mist hour: Three Pools mirror the moon, the Su Causeway willows, and the love-story legends that every Chinese guest knows by heart.

Pagoda Hill or Gardens

Stroll the Guo Villa gardens and the long causeways — your buddy times the photo spots between tour groups. Option to climb Leifeng Pagoda for the panoramic view (ticket included).

Longjing Tea Village

Into the hills: walk the tea terraces, learn why "two leaves and a bud" rules the harvest, then sit with a farming family for a proper tasting — comparing first-pick against later flushes. Watch the hand-firing wok work (it takes 10,000 presses an hour — the master's palm is proof).

Lakeside Lunch

West Lake vinegar fish (the sweet-sour original), Dongpo pork braised to wobble, dragon-well shrimp with the tea you just tasted. Vegetarian menu strong here — the monastery tradition next door.

Flyover option: Lingyin Temple and the Feilai Peak grottoes — 300 Buddhas carved into living rock between the 10th and 14th centuries. Quieter alternative: tea museum and a causeway bicycle loop. Day ends at lake or station, your choice.

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy tea and ship it home?
Yes — the family village ships internationally (EMS/DHL), and prices are farm-direct, well below airport shops. Your buddy helps with the paperwork.
Is this doable from Shanghai in one day?
Perfectly: 45–60 min by fast rail each way. Book the 07:00 train out and the 19:00 return; we choreograph the day around them.

Flew in from Shanghai for the day. Mist on the lake, tea with the farming family, fish lunch — my zen day in China. They shipped the Longjing home for me; it arrived in Seoul in a week.
